On August 7, the second screening of the cultural and educational project “1,000 Minutes of Student Cinema”, initiated by the Institute of Screen Arts of the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Karyi University of Theatre, Cinema and Television, took place at the Dovzhenko Centre’s Cinema Lecture Hall.

Although the event began with an air-raid alert, this did not prevent the screening from going ahead. Instead, it highlighted the conditions in which young filmmakers are creating their work today. After the air-raid alert was lifted, the venue once again filled with audiences, who were able to enjoy a diverse selection of compelling films.

This time, the programme featured eight student films with a combined runtime of 90 minutes. The filmmakers explored complex and sensitive subjects, ranging from hearing loss to the loss of a child. The films demonstrated the directors’ courage to address serious and topical issues. The programme included “Heterochromia,” “Mother. Part One,” “The Promise,” “The Last Concert,” “Verdict86,” “Eat the Frog,” “On the Edge,” and “I Love You.” The programme was presented by Anton Malynovskyi, a third-year student in the Organization of Film and Television Production educational and professional programme.

The audience included current and prospective students, lecturers, representatives of the film industry, and admirers of Ukrainian cinema. For young filmmakers, the project provides an opportunity to present their work beyond the classroom, experience the audience’s immediate response, and engage in a direct conversation about their films.

As is customary, the screening was followed by a discussion with the filmmakers, moderated by film scholar Oleh Zozulia. Olha Havrysh, Bohdan Turovskyi, Olha Prykhodko, Valeriia Tsarenko, Zakhar Shestiaiev, and Kateryna Avksentieva answered questions from the audience and shared insights into the making of their films.

The project continues to expand to new venues, introducing audiences to emerging filmmakers and their work. On August 14, a special programme of “1,000 Minutes of Student Cinema” will be presented at the Kinobouquet Festival, organized by the “Watch Ukrainian” Association as part of Bouquet Kyiv Stage 2026 at the Saint Sophia Cathedral National Conservation Area.

The cultural and educational project “1,000 Minutes of Student Cinema” is implemented by the Institute of Screen Arts of the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Karyi University of Theatre, Cinema and Television and the KREM student cultural and educational platform — “Personnel Reserve of Screen Arts” — with the support of the Ukrainian State Film Agency.
