Andrii Storchak (3rd year, Media Production Producing) and Ivan Yasyk (3rd year, Screenwriting for Film and Television), students at the Institute of Screen Arts of the I. K. Karpenko-Karyi Kyiv National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television, are taking part in the 6th FilmEU Summit, held on 23–25 June 2026 in Brussels at LUCA School of Arts.

On 25 June, as part of the FilmEU Annual Student Film Festival, their short fiction film “Marie” will be screened. The film was selected for the festival programme from among more than 200 student films submitted by European film schools.

The film was produced by Andrii Storchak and directed by Ivan Yasyk. The lead roles are played by Denys Kyrii-Fedosenko (3rd year, Media Production Producing) and Daryna Pushkar (4th year, Acting for Theatre and Film).

The story follows Kolia, a twenty-year-old who tries to brush his problems aside and live at his own pace. A chance encounter with a girl named Marie quickly grows into something close — but fate has plans of its own.

FilmEU is a European university alliance in the field of film and media arts that brings together higher education institutions from across Europe, developing joint study programmes, academic mobility and professional collaboration.

The students’ trip to Brussels was made possible with the support of the Erasmus+ programme, as part of academic mobility and our University’s cooperation with FilmEU.

This year’s summit theme, ENACT CHANGE – weaving the a(rts) into STEM, focuses on the interplay between the arts, education, science, technology and social change.

«During the summit, we’ve already had the chance to meet graduates of the Joint MA Kino Eyes programme, as well as representatives of the Slovak school VŠMU, the Belgian film school LUCA and the Danish academy VIA. I believe these connections could become the foundation for further cooperation between our universities and for future international co-production projects once we finish our studies», — said the film’s producer, Andrii Storchak.

«As students from Ukraine, it matters to us that contemporary stories about what’s happening in our country are heard within the European professional community. Taking part in the FilmEU Summit gives us a chance to talk about the Ukrainian experience through the language of cinema and to present the results of our film education abroad», — said the film’s director, Ivan Yasyk.

For the Karpenko-Kary University, the students’ participation in the FilmEU Summit is an example of how student filmmaking can become part of international professional exchange, open up new contacts for young authors, and strengthen the presence of Ukrainian film education in the European context.
